Many amateur gardeners prefer to plant only the most proven and reliable grape varieties that give stable crops every year, regardless of weather vagaries. Strashensky is one of such varieties that have successfully passed the test of time.

Strashensky grapes - delicious, beautiful and fruitful

This variety was created by Moldovan breeders in the 70s of the last century and has since spread widely in all areas of traditional viticulture in Russia and Ukraine. This grape is hybrid, was obtained by crossing several varieties. Currently included in the State Register of the Russian Federation for the North Caucasus region.

Straseni grapes - a reliable high-yielding variety of Moldavian selection

Strashensky is a table grape variety of medium early ripening period. The clusters are very large, of moderate density, weigh an average of 0.6-1.5 kg, but with good care they can be even larger. The berries are round in shape, dark purple, almost black, with a strong waxy coating, very large, weighing 6-12 g, of a harmonious taste. Fruits bushes Strashensky begin in 1-2 years after planting.

Large and beautiful clusters of Strashensky are in steady demand among buyers in local markets, but they are unsuitable for transportation over long distances.

Grapes are poorly stored, since it was originally intended for quick fresh consumption. But amateur gardeners successfully use it for home-made preparations (wine, compotes, raisins).

Although this variety is intended for fresh consumption, many use it for making wine.

The flowers at Strashensky are bisexual, so planting of additional pollinating varieties is not required. Depending on the soil and climatic conditions and care, the bushes turn out to be tall or medium tall.

Features of planting and cultivating varieties

The winter hardiness of this variety is insufficient, therefore it is better to plant it in the spring so that the seedlings have time to take root well during the summer. Pits for planting are dug in such a way that the root system of the bushes develops at a depth of about half a meter.

Drought tolerance in Strashensky is at an average level. Rains during flowering can provoke peeling (the formation of small underdeveloped fruits), and during the ripening period the berries often crack due to excess moisture. The laying of the deep root system in plants enhances both winter hardiness and resistance to uneven rainfall. For the proper development of deep roots, seedlings from the very beginning rarely water, but abundantly, deeply soaking the ground.

The landing site is chosen with fertile soil and good lighting. Strashensky can be planted with both cuttings and seedlings. However, the reproduction of grapes by seedlings provides a more rapid rooting and development of bushes.

To obtain especially beautiful and large berries, experienced winegrowers normalize the harvest:

  1. Before blooming, all unnecessary inflorescences are cut, leaving no more than one inflorescence to shoot.
  2. During flowering, long flower brushes shorten by a quarter or a third of their length.

It is also recommended that you pinch all stepsons regularly during the season.

Crop normalization improves the quality and presentation of grapes

In the fall, after the onset of frost, the vines are removed from the trellises, lowered to the ground and covered. Strashensky cannot boast of high winter hardiness, even short-term frosts around -19-22 ° C are dangerous for this variety.

For winter, grapes need to be lowered to the ground and covered

In spring, the shelter is removed, and the vines are tied to the trellis.

Pruning is done in the fall, before shelter. Spring pruning causes the vines to “cry” and drains plants.

Strashensky does not suffer too much from diseases and pests, he has:

  • increased resistance to mildew, phylloxera and spider mites;
  • average resistance to oidium;
  • resistance to gray rot is above average, with the timely collection of a ripened crop, the berries are almost not affected by rot.

Despite resistance to diseases and pests, it is necessary to spray grapes for prevention. During the season, you need to carry out 3-4 treatments, the first in the beginning of spring, and the last one month before harvesting.

I don’t know how in other regions, but in the Kuban there is, so to speak, the “Strashensky phenomenon”! The taste at any stage of ripeness is mediocre (even when left on the bush until October), but the highest presentation (with proper care) seems to act irresistibly on the buyer - like a boa constrictor on a rabbit. All familiar winegrowers note that among the assortment brought to the market, the variety flies first, like hotcakes. Moreover, we give with a neighbor (we both hold Strashensky) to taste the harvest - and what, approximately every second taste is VERY pleasant! The neighbor has long been ready to replace Strashensky with a more delicious one, and relatives forbid! Here is a paradox. Features of cultivating the variety: if you want to get edible and beautiful products, be sure to pinch 15-20% of the inflorescence at the beginning of flowering, do not thicken the bush and in no case overload it with the crop.

My experience with Strashensky for at least 40 years with a break (inherited bushes uprooted by inexperience, after ten years I started again and do not regret). All these years, the variety was positioned by me as a good, stable and high-yielding one. But not more.

I rarely leave shoots, after 20-25 cm, since the leaf is large. Before flowering, I leave one inflorescence to shoot, pinch it by a third. As soon as the first caps are dropped I pinch the escape. No nodes, I just delete the top. I constantly pinch my stepsons on one sheet. Before ripening, the numbers of August 10 mint shoots.

Strashensky grapes are a reliable, high-yielding, time-tested variety, which in its characteristics is very attractive for both beginner gardeners and owners of commodity plantations selling fresh berries on the local market.
